Terrazzo is one of the most fascinating surfaces in contemporary design: an ancient material, now reinterpreted to meet increasingly diverse aesthetic and functional requirements. It offers endless design possibilities, from residential interiors to public spaces, easily adapting to different contexts and styles.

<h2 class="heading2">What is terrazzo (and why designers love it again)</h2>

Despite its name, terrazzo is a composite material made of marble and stone chips bound together with a cement-based mixture. 
Its origins date back to 15th-century Venice, where Venetian &ldquo;terrazzieri&rdquo; began reusing marble offcuts from high-end craftsmanship to create a durable and cost-effective flooring solution.

In recent years, terrazzo has regained a central role in contemporary design because it responds to a very current need: introducing texture, movement and identity without excess. It fits naturally into modern, minimalist, and contemporary interiors. 
The chips interact with light and create depth and visual dynamism, while terrazzo easily pairs with neutral palettes, smooth surfaces, soft colors and natural materials such as wood and stone. It creates continuity between spaces and surfaces, which is one of the main reasons why it is so popular with architects and designers.

<h2 class="heading2">Terrazzo tile ideas for any spaces</h2>

When choosing terrazzo&nbsp;tiles for different interiors, one of the first aspects to consider is the size of the space.

The Bez Rodzynek Cake Studio was conceived as a place where architecture and creativity reinterpret the universe of patisserie, in an interior with a strong identity and rich personality provided by Ergon&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.emilamerica.com/collections/brand/ergon/medley/" target="_blank">Medley collection</a>. The project, the work of the mode:lina&trade; architekci firm with Kinga Kin, who originated the concept, takes shape in a unique spatial language.

It was a great pleasure to interview the team and find out more about the creative idea and the process that guided their work.

<h2 class="heading2">What is the philosophy that inspires your interior design projects?</h2>

The philosophy that inspires our interior design projects is based on the creation of experiences. We believe that every project must tell a clear story, transforming it into a spatial experience that combines practicality, emotion and a distinctive visual identity. So our idea of design is based on people, deploying surprising solutions and details that make every location unique and memorable.

<h2 class="heading2">What was the most exciting thing about this project?</h2>

The most exciting thing about this project was translating the brand&rsquo;s original concept into the language of architecture. We had fun working playfully with materials and colours: shades of pink, blocks of glass like jelly cubes, the surfaces we chose and details inspired by sugar all recount the confectioners&rsquo; skills in spatial terms. The biggest challenge was to create a compact workplace that would still be convenient and immediately recognisable for visitors.

<h2 class="heading2">What did you most appreciate about the Emilgroup materials?</h2>

We greatly admire Emilgroup for their constant commitment to quality and their ability to supply materials that combine durability with immense aesthetic value. The various collections set us free to work with textures, colours and surfaces that give full expression to our storytelling approach. It&rsquo;s always a huge advantage to collaborate with producers that support design innovation and offer solutions that facilitate creative freedom.

Bez Rodzynek Cake Studio: interview with mode:lina™ architekci

The 3D Cube mosaic from the W-Circles collection won over the jury of the Archiproducts Design Awards 2025 in the Finishes category, one of the most important awards in the design world.

W-Circles was born from the study of the concentric rings of wood, reinterpreted in a ceramic key to convey the strength and harmony of natural materials.

From this inspiration comes the 3D Cube Mosaic, which enhances the three-dimensionality of surfaces, transforming the wooden texture into a mosaic of volumes and reliefs. The tiles, reminiscent of small wooden blocks, express warmth and depth, while the interplay of light and shadow highlights their contemporary dynamism.

This award is a testament to Emilgroup&rsquo;s ongoing commitment to blending innovation and creativity, bringing to the world the value and beauty of Italian design excellence.
